Black, female-owned brands + blogs to support.
According to the 2019 State Of Women-Owned Business Report, 21% of those businesses are black women-owned. Did you know that 42% of new businesses started last year are also owned by black women? Here at What The Fluff, we are doing our part to bridge the gap. We are a female-founded inclusive small business dedicated to providing the best lash + brow services in LA, giving our clients the power to feel at home during each visit, regardless of ethnicity or sexual orientation. In an effort to further support the black community and women-owned small businesses, we’ve compiled a list of all our favorites. We hope you enjoy.
Nayamka Roberts-Smith, LE
Licensed esthetician and known here in LA as the Beautyologist, Nayamka spreads “skincare knowledge to women of color, an often neglected demographic in the skincare industry.” Though I have not personally booked any services with her yet, her online presence and willing to share + educate has me dying for an appointment. Sunscreen awareness for people of color, anti-aging methods for darker complexions, you name it— she does an excellent job of covering it all. Check out her website for more information, shop, or to book a service at her studio here. Nayamka is also live on YouTube and Instagram.
Carla Bonilla, LE
A personal friend of mine, and Los Angeles esthetician working alongside the LA Beautyologist, Carla is passionate about taking care of the skin you are in. Beyond the surface of skincare, Carla is a constant advocate for women of color providing lifestyle tips to empower women to embrace their roots while fueling their mind, body, and soul. Book an appointment with Carla here and keep up with her via Instagram.
Gianne Nascimento, Stylist + Educator
To put it bluntly, Gianne is curly girl goals right out of the gate. I have been dying to personally get in for a curly cut appointment with Gianne for a hot minute (thanks a lot, pandemic). As an award winning stylist specializing in color, texture, and hair health she sets the bar high in her industry. If embracing your natural hair is your jam, especially if you have curls, run don’t walk and book an appointment. Her Instagram is full of beautiful hair photos, and you can book an appointment online with her at Luxlab.
